Your Alabama Power bill is too high.
Before you just pay it, check the reading, the rate and the help you may qualify for. Alabama Power is regulated by the Alabama Public Service Commission, and its rules give you real leverage.
Check these first
- Was the reading estimated? Look for "estimated" on the bill. A catch-up bill after estimates can make one month look huge.
- Billing errors get corrected. The PSC's billing rule covers corrections for up to 36 months, and if the utility's own failure caused an undercharge that you didn't contribute to, it corrects it without charge to you. source
- Customers on SSI certified by Alabama Medicaid can get the $14.50 monthly base charge waived under Rider SSI. source
- Ask which rate is cheapest for you. Under the PSC's general rules, you can ask in writing which rate is "most advantageous" for your home.
- Ask for a meter test if usage jumped and nothing in your home changed.
Help paying
